AI-Powered Personalized Feedback Boosts Dental Students’ Radiographic Diagnostic Skills

Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing dental education. In a recent controlled study at Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University, researchers explored how ChatGPT-4o’s MeSH-based personalized learning guides impact dental students’ abilities to interpret radiographs. The study compared this AI-driven feedback to the traditional method of simply telling students whether their answers were correct or incorrect.

How AI Makes a Difference

110 fifth-year dental students participated in the study. The experimental group received customized study guides, generated by ChatGPT-4o, that directly addressed their knowledge gaps using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). The control group received only basic correct/incorrect feedback. After a month, both groups took a post-test. The results were striking: students with AI-assisted feedback improved their scores by an average of 3.6 points, while those with traditional feedback improved by only 1.3 points.

This research highlights the transformative potential of AI in dental education. Personalized, AI-powered feedback not only boosts diagnostic skills, but also increases student satisfaction. As technology advances, AI tools like ChatGPT-4o could become essential in medical training.
