Breakthrough in Crop Genetics: Advancing Resilience and Yields

Innovative scientists have successfully developed a comprehensive pan-genome for crucial food crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, and aubergines. This research involved sequencing the genomes of 22 different Solanum species, paving the way for crops that can yield more and withstand harsh conditions.

According to the Natural History Museum (NHM), which supported this significant study, global agricultural systems are under threat from extreme environmental events such as droughts, floods, and diseases. Currently, over 75% of the world’s food supply relies on just 12 extensively bred commodity crops. By enhancing the genetic understanding of these crops, researchers aim to boost resilience and ensure a stable food supply for the future.
