Their urgent message, released through the Future of Life Institute, highlights the risks and unknowns surrounding these advanced AI models. 
Why Leaders Want an AI Pause
The open letter argues that current AI research is moving too fast, with little oversight or debate over the implications of creating machines smarter than humans. The signatories urge governments and tech companies to immediately ban the development of so-called “superintelligent” AI until it can be proven safe, controllable, and is broadly accepted by the public. They stress that tackling these risks now is necessary to prevent potential disasters in the future.
