Halloween 2025: What to Expect from the Night Sky
Many people think Halloween always features a full moon, but that’s not the case this year. On October 31, 2025, the moon will shine as a waxing gibbous. This means it’s bright and nearly full, but not quite there yet.

Why Isn’t There a Full Moon on Halloween 2025?
The lunar cycle doesn’t sync perfectly with our calendar. As a result, full moons on Halloween are rare. The last one appeared in 2020, and the next won’t show up until 2039. So, if you’re planning spooky festivities under a full moon, you’ll have to wait a bit longer.
Even though Halloween 2025 won’t have a full moon, the waxing gibbous phase will still provide plenty of light for trick-or-treaters and night sky watchers. Take a moment tonight to appreciate the beauty of the moon and see what else you can spot in the sky—stars, planets, and maybe even some bats!
