The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) hosted its fifth ‘Stand Up for Journalism’ workshop on November 6-7, 2025, gathering media professionals to discuss the future of journalism and workers’ rights in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This event brought together journalists, union leaders, and digital experts to examine how AI is transforming newsrooms, storytelling, and the very fabric of journalistic work.

AI: Friend or Foe for Journalists?
Participants dove into heated debates about whether AI will be a helpful tool or a job-snatching robot overlord (looking at you, ChatGPT). The workshop explored how AI-driven tools can streamline fact-checking and research but also raised serious concerns about job security and ethical standards. Journalists voiced their worries about losing creative control while unions stressed the need for strong protections and fair working conditions.
Preparing for the Future
One key takeaway: the future of journalism depends on balancing technology with human values. The EFJ encouraged newsrooms to actively engage with new technologies while championing transparency and workers’ rights. In the end, the workshop left everyone inspired to adapt, innovate, and—perhaps most importantly—not let the robots write their next paycheck.
With AI changing the newsroom, it’s clear that journalists will need to keep their pencils—and contracts—sharp!
