NASA Highlights Key Gaps in Exoplanet Research

Understanding Exoplanet Science

NASA has recently identified significant gaps in exoplanet science. As scientists strive to unravel the mysteries of the universe, having a clear game plan becomes crucial. This is especially true in fields like astronomy, where the National Academies produce Decadal Surveys to set research priorities. These surveys help unify researchers around specific goals, even when they might disagree on finer details.

Recently, two prominent scientists from NASA’s Exoplanet Exploration Program, Dr. Karl Stapelfeldt and Dr. Eric Mamajek, released a tactical report outlining 17 scientific goals for the program. This report, initially circulated internally in January 2025, aims to guide the ExEP’s efforts over the next 3-5 years. By focusing on these specific objectives, NASA hopes to enhance our understanding of exoplanets and their characteristics.
