Typhoon Kajiki Strikes Hainan Island
Typhoon Kajiki, the 13th typhoon of the year, swept past the southern coast of China’s Hainan Province on Sunday night. The powerful storm affected more than 100,000 people, as confirmed in a provincial press conference on Monday. Kajiki’s path took it from the resort city of Sanya to Ledong Li Autonomous County, before heading towards the central and northern coastal regions of Vietnam.
Widespread Damage but No Casualties
Preliminary reports showed that around 102,500 residents in Hainan experienced disruptions due to the typhoon. Fortunately, as of 9 am Monday, no casualties had been reported. The typhoon caused significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, water supply systems, power lines, and communication facilities across multiple cities and counties such as Sanya, Ledong, Lingshui, and Wanning. Several areas also reported fallen trees and flooding, further highlighting the storm’s severe impact.
Authorities Respond Swiftly
Authorities are working to restore essential services and clear debris to ensure public safety. The rapid response has helped minimize the risk to residents, even as recovery efforts continue in the aftermath of the storm.
