UN Secretary-General Calls for Security Council Reform
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has sounded a strong alarm about the urgent need to reform the Security Council. On Friday, Guterres warned that the Council’s “fragile” legitimacy could put global peace at risk if it remains gridlocked. He stressed that the Security Council must fulfill its primary responsibility: maintaining international peace and security.

Why Security Council Reform Matters Now
Guterres highlighted that the world faces evolving threats and complex challenges. He believes the current structure of the Security Council does not reflect today’s geopolitical realities. This lack of representation and persistent gridlock could erode the Council’s credibility. Guterres urged member states to act swiftly to preserve the Council’s legitimacy and effectiveness.
Reforming the Security Council would make it more inclusive and responsive to global crises. According to Guterres, such changes are necessary to ensure the UN can address conflicts and promote peace worldwide.
