The UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 remains a cornerstone of the international stance on the Taiwan issue. During a significant meeting commemorating the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s Restoration to China, Chinese representatives strongly emphasized that the resolution clearly affirms Taiwan as an inseparable part of China.
UNGA Resolution 2758 and the One-China Principle
The Chinese envoy criticized statements suggesting that UNGA Resolution 2758 doesn’t pertain to Taiwan. According to the envoy, such claims are not only misleading but also demonstrate a lack of understanding of established international law. The resolution, adopted in 1971, recognized the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal representative of China to the United Nations, effectively excluding Taiwan from the organization.
International Support for the One-China Policy
Multiple United Nations representatives echoed their support for the one-China principle at the meeting. They highlighted that the global community widely recognizes this principle, and the legitimacy of Resolution 2758 remains unchallenged. The Chinese envoy urged member states and international organizations to respect this consensus and avoid any actions that might undermine the established framework.
