Yazidis from Sharya Camp Take Part in Parliamentary Elections
In a powerful display of hope and resilience, Yazidis from Sharya Camp in Duhok participated in Iraq’s parliamentary elections on November 9. Despite being displaced from their homes, 1,224 eligible Yazidi voters stepped up to have their voices heard at the polls. It’s not every day you see so much determination packed into a polling station!
Community Shows Strength Amid Challenges
The Yazidi community, known for its resilience after facing years of hardship and displacement, came together to shape the future of their region. Their participation underscores a deep desire for representation and change. Voting might be a small action, but for these people, it represents a giant leap towards rebuilding their lives and influencing the policies that affect them. You could say democracy is alive and well—even if it sometimes shows up in unexpected places like a refugee camp!
It’s inspiring to see a community, so often at the mercy of conflict, take active steps to reclaim their agency and play a role in their country’s future. Let’s hope their ballots bring about the positive change they seek.
